Murphy’s Day Out – Trelissick

Now the weather is brightening up and it’s warmer, it’s the perfect time to explore the gardens in Cornwall! Murph and I headed off to Trelissick this month for our doggy day out! Trelissick is at Feock, not too far from Merchant House, it was only around a ten minute drive which is perfect because I prefer not to drive too far with him on hot days in the stuffy car.

Trelissick is owned by the National Trust, within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It boasts some of the best views we’ve seen from any garden (and we’ve visited lots!). I enjoyed gazing over the Fal Estuary whilst Murphy ran and explored the Woodland Walk. The magnificent house was built in the 1750’s by John Lawrence and in the 1800’s it was bought by the famous Daniell family (whom the Thomas Daniell is named after, opposite Merchant House) Of course, Thomas Daniell himself actually went bankrupt through gambling in the end which meant he lost Trelissick, the real treasure!

In the 1900’s Trelissick was owned by Leonard Cunliffe, the Director of Harrods. Apparently he was sailing in his boat when he spotted Trelissick House and fell in love with it, it’s easy to see why. He then passed the house when he died to his step-daughter who was the second cousin of Florence Nightingale! It is possible to visit the house but as it’s not suitable for big wagging tails, we didn’t go in!

We did enjoy the 300 acres of countryside though and the parkland, the perfect place to take a picnic. There are North and South woodland walks with superb river views and even an old Iron Age fort where the embankments can still be seen! Visiting at this time of year, we saw so many beautiful flowers, it was a blanket of beautiful colour!

There is a café on site but we hopped on the Enterprise Boat and went to Malpas instead where we enjoyed a visit to the Heron Inn who are super dog friendly! Murphy was spoiled and I enjoyed a bite to eat and soaked in the fabulous views then we walked around the duck pond and wandered this side of the river, enjoying a Kelly’s Ice Cream (Murph had one too!) before returning to Merchant House and collapsing in the lounge together, exhausted! There really is nowhere better than Cornwall for a doggy day out!

Trelissick comes highly recommended! Make sure you check out our bespoke garden break – explore the perfect gardens for you and we can even organise a packed lunch or recommend places for a much-needed pit stop!
