Here at Merchant House we’re known to be quite the cake connoisseurs with customers always commenting on Chef Dave’s homemade creations. We’ve searched high and low to find cake in Cornwall to meet our high (tea) standards! Here is our pick of the best for those who fancy a Cornish cake crawl:
Gooey homemade cakes, including ones such as Lavender Treacle Tart, Rose Petal and Honey Scones and Toblerone Chocolate Brownies, Dolly’s is a wonderful tea room with a vintage twist. Expect cocktails in teapots, an unrivalled Gin collection, framed photos of Donny Osmond and beautiful Labrador, Hebe, to greet you wearing pearls! Dogs are very welcome, making this one of our favourite places!
When in Truro looking for cake, Merchant House is the first choice, obviously! However, for shoppers, we also highly rate Bone China. Pretty cupcakes are the order of the day, with a range of flavours. Indulge in tea and cake (or perhaps cocktails with your cake) all served on (you guessed it) bone china. Imagine high tea served on tiered plates in the heart of Truro… off to Bone China we go, bring on the calories!
The home of great desserts, half of the people booking for Sunday roast each week are eating the roast purely as an appetizer before afters! This is traditional cake at its finest! Cream cakes, eclairs, gateaux, treacle pudding, pavlova, sponge pudding, cheesecake and more, expect more cake than you can handle – it’s turned Connor Downs into a destination cake stop!
The award for ‘Best Window Display’ goes to… Pauline’s! With a reputation that is pretty tough to beat, Pauline’s is a Trip Advisor favourite and with good reason too! Their staple has to be the classic cream tea, complete with heaps of jam and lashings of cream, it’s a real treat!
We love our cake, or “cakey-tea” as it would be called in Poldark! All Merchant House guests receive complimentary homemade cake and tea in our cosy lounge when they stay with us. Have you been somewhere in Cornwall that serves exceedingly good cake? Do drop us a line and let us know. Better still, post a picture to our Facebook or tag us with your photo on Instagram, we love a bit of cake-spiration!
