We hope to have an April full of sunshine but in the event that it rains we’ve put together our top ten suggestions on ways to spend a rainy day in Cornwall. And the best bit is… some of them are not too far from our front door!
A lovely way to shelter from the rain for a few hours and discover Cornish history and archaeology, this is the only museum in Cornwall with a British Museum supported, Ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian permanent exhibition, along with our collection of rare ceramics, a world-renowned mineral collection and exceptional art on display.
Come face to face with freshwater turtles, watch pulsating jellyfish and meet pufferfish! This is the perfect place to hide from the rain and make some underwater friends. Visit the ocean tank and walk through an underwater tunnel offering incredible views of giant Loggerhead turtles, reef sharks and shoals of brightly coloured fish!
One of our favourite ways to dodge the rain is shopping in Truro. Explore the local city boutiques and make a mad dash from shop door to shop door to avoid the downpour. Of course, you could just head to Primark… you can spend hours in there and won’t want to leave!
A few hours nice and warm in the dark with popcorn and some pick n mix… we’re there! Just down the hill from Merchant House you’ll find The Plaza Cinema. Catch the latest blockbuster and get settled for an afternoon of entertainment, without even a raindrop in sight!
Head to Falmouth for the day and explore the Maritime Museum. An award winning attraction,: interactive for kids and with lots of interesting information for adults to read, there are also often exhibitions to see and activities to take part in.
For a soothing rain-free day head to The Great Escape. Literally an escape from it all, their woodland escape relaxation room is the ideal haven to hide out in, with drapes and mood lighting so you can forget the weather and enjoy a muscle-melting massage…. Bliss!
You can’t go wrong with a trip to the Eden Project. Visit the massive Biomes housing the largest rainforest in captivity, an array of plants and exhibitions, fun for kids and more. On a rainy day head to the Rainforest Biome and step straight into the tropical heat!
Nothing beats bowling for a bit of indoor fun! Make your way to Truro Bowl, get those bowling shoes laced up and go for a strike! A fun afternoon in all weathers, Truro Bowl has you covered.
Why not visit the local art galleries for a way to spend the afternoon enjoying the local art scene. At the bottom of Lemon Street, just down the hill from Merchant House you’ll find the Lemon Street Gallery, one of the country’s leading contemporary galleries. It’s got quite the reputation and an impressive yet varied selection of artists.
Tea and Cake by the Fire
Finally, you can’t beat a good cuppa and a slice of homemade cake next to the fire! Bring a novel and curl up for the afternoon. You’ll be able to hear the rain outside but you’ll be toasty warm next to the flames… a perfect afternoon – and when you stay at Merchant House, you’ll receive complimentary tea and homemade cake – even better!
